The mission of St. James Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is to provide a way for laypeople of St. James to be of service to the poor in whom is seen the face of Christ. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international organization of laypeople who seek in a spirit of justice and charity to help the poor, the needy and the disadvantaged through practical works of charity. Although affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, all people regardless of race, religion or background are offered assistance. “Need, not creed,” is the tradition inherited from founder, Frederic Ozanam and patron, St. Vincent de Paul.
Members of St. James Conference of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul assist the poor through person-to-person service. Material aid, community resources, emotional support and spiritual comfort are typically provided through pairs of members during home visits. Those assisted are considered Friends in Need; it is hoped that Society of St. Vincent de Paul members will empower Friends in Need to become more self-sufficient.
Friends in Need call a general helpline number, 815-986-5825, early in the week to explain their needs. A phone helper assigns a home visit team if one is available. During the visit the dignity of each man and woman served is kept in mind. The goal is a relationship, not a handout. Gospel values, prayer and dialogue at meetings empower members to grow spiritually and thus be able to continue ministering.
The St. James Society of St. Vincent de Paul exists entirely on donations which are always welcome and appreciated. It could not continue to exist without donations of time, energy and monetary gifts.
May the Holy Spirit continue to breathe life into Friends in Need, members and potential members and you.
